P2 – Analyse the Positive and Negative Social Effects of Social Media Products
It is clear to some people that Social Media is redefining the
global landscape. It affects how we communicate with friends, family and
complete strangers. We often use social media to keep up to date with the
latest news and become aware of how several businesses and brands can operate
in different forms. There are several social media accounts that people all
over the world are using, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
The Global Impact of Facebook
Facebook, launched in February 2004, is the largest social
network in the world in terms of the number of active users. As of August 2015,
Facebook had over 1.18 billion monthly active users.
It is clear how Facebook is shown to support several
businesses by enabling them to promote their activities, and match them with
the customers who are most likely to be interested in consuming their products
and services. In a January report commissioned by Facebook, Deloitte declared
that Facebook added $227 billion and 4.5 million jobs to the global economy in
2014. Jolyon Barker, Deloitte’s global managing director of technology, media
and telecommunications, commented that
“Facebook enables significant global economic activity by
helping to unlock new opportunities through connecting people and businesses,
lowering barriers to marketing and stimulating innovation.”
Below are some clear problems which can be associated with the use and overuse of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
-Teens who use Facebook more often show more narcissistic tendencies while young adults who have a strong Facebook presence show more signs of other psychological disorders, including antisocial behaviours, mania and aggressive tendencies.-Facebook can be distracting and can negatively impact learning. Studies found that middle school, high school and college students who checked Facebook at least once during a 15-minute study period achieved lower grades.
