Understanding existing social media products
P1 A- Purpose
Below I discuss the purpose of several social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It is clear how they seek to obtain their own individual purpose and usually they hold differing views to other accounts.
Facebook
Facebook's official mission
statement is "To give people the power to share and make the world more
open and connected." When the Facebook IPO was launched, founder Mark
Zuckerberg posted this Vision on his own official Facebook page, which more
specifically states the value of Facebook to the average Facebook user.
"People use Facebook to
stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world,
and to share and express what matters to them."
Clearly, Facebook’s aim is to connect people from various
parts of the world, so that they can interact through their online social media
site. This is developed through people creating and sharing their own
information on a personalised profile, which others can view if they are added
as a ‘friend’. This way they can communicate with friends, meet new people or
even reach out to distant relatives online. Posts can also be shared through
the public, which others can view and ‘like’ or ‘comment’ on. This allows more
interaction through the site and as Facebook officially claims, “make the world
more open and connected”.
Twitter
The officially announced mission statement from Twitter is “To
give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly,
without barriers”.
As presented in the official mission statement, it is clear
how Twitter users are able to ‘tweet’ and share information for various other
users to view, in an easy and instant way. Images can be shared, as well as
text, to family, friends and the greater public. Twitter is known famously as a
site for interacting with celebrities or people who are recognised as
constantly being in the public eye and also using the social media site.
Instagram
Instagram’s official mission
statement is “To capture and share the world’s moments”.
The aim for Instagram users
is to be able to experience moments in your friends/ relatives lives through
pictures as they happen. Users are able to share images on multiple services
for family and friends to view, instantly after it has been uploaded. There are
several filters available for people to enhance and develop their photos,
before sharing with those they wish.
As well as sharing your own
personal photos through Instagram, you are able to also view the photos of
those you wish such as family, friends and even celebrities, or those that are
viewed in the public eye. This shows how the overall purpose of such an app, is
to communicate with several users through the use of sharing images.
